Description

PT-141 (Bremelanotide) is a synthetic peptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It was originally developed from the peptide Melanotan II, with the specific intent of isolating the aphrodisiac effects while eliminating the melanogenesis (tanning) properties.

Unlike traditional research agents for sexual dysfunction (such as PDE5 inhibitors like sildenafil) which act on the vascular system, PT-141 acts directly on the Central Nervous System (CNS). It functions as a non-selective agonist of the melanocortin receptors (specifically MC3R and MC4R) in the hypothalamus. This unique mechanism makes it a primary subject of research for centrally-mediated libido and arousal disorders that are not caused by blood flow restrictions.

• Libido & Arousal (CNS Pathways): PT-141 is the gold standard for researching the neural pathways of sexual desire. Studies in both male and female rat models have shown it induces lordosis (receptivity) and erectile activity by stimulating dopamine release in the medial preoptic area of the brain.
